The City of Rosemount is located 15 miles south of the Twin Cities Metropolitan area. In 1853, the first settlers, William and Walter Strathern and C. H. Carr came from Scotland by way of New York to stake their claim. As the number of settlers increased, there came a need for community organization. On May 11, 1858, settlers met at the home of Thomas Dowd for the first township meeting. Coincidentally, this was the same day that Minnesota became a state.
During World War II, the Federal Government acquired 13,000 acres of farmland in Rosemount, displacing 90 families in 1942. Construction of the Gopher Ordnance Works (a munitions plant) on said farmland, began in May of 1942 by E.I. Dupont deNemours and Company. Twenty thousand workers and 856 new buildings were part of the project at a cost of $123,855,448.
Operations of the war munitions plant, which was never fully functioning, ceased in April of 1945. At that time 8,000 acres of the land were obtained by the University of Minnesota and a number of the buildings were used during the 1947-48 polio outbreak. Currently, the University of Minnesota’s Agricultural Research Station and the Dakota County Technical College are located on part of the site.
The western part of Rosemount includes a dynamic, expanding residential community with an older, yet vital, commercial center at its heart. Housing options include single family homes, townhomes, condominiums, low-income housing and a senior citizen center. Residential developments with hundreds of homes are currently under development, and this pattern of growth will continue for years to come.
A strong, united business community has been achieved in Rosemount through the activity and cooperation of local business, the city, the chamber of commerce and other civic organizations. More than 500 acres of industrial and commercial zoned land have been reserved for development in Rosemount. Rail, air, barge, and freeway access provide Rosemount’s economic community with an expedient transportation system. Four major highways link Rosemount to Minneapolis and St. Paul.
In 2010 the population of Rosemount was 21,874 with a projected 2020 population of 38,400.
