Work has begun on the Bus Rapid Transit Line on Cedar Avenue.
Road Construction for Bus Rapid Transit
Driving on Cedar Avenue will be difficult for nearly 2 years during the construction of new lanes for buses and emergency vehicles. The Minnesota Valley Transit Authority will operate the buses, routes and transit stations when the project is completed in 2012.
There is a Construction Chat scheduled for Wednesday, May 11, from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m, at the Western Service Center on Galaxie Avenue in Apple Valley. Construction staff will be there to talk about construction activities on Cedar Avenue.
Most interesting to me is how Bus Rapid Transit, or BRT differs from normal, express bus routes. Special buses will have dedicated rights of way, similar to how light rail works. The buses will be on a very regular schedule with quicker times between bus departures. This means, you can show up and jump on the bus in just a few minutes, much how light rail works.
Here is something I did not know, the buses have technology that will allow them to extend a green light so they don’t have to make unnecessary stops. It seems the drivers can extend a light that is already green, however, they cannot turn a stop light from red to green. I didn’t know they would have that capability. The bus route is from the new transit center on Cedar Avenue, South of Dodd Road, all the way up Cedar to the Mall of Americal, from there riders will transfer to the light rail to continue their commute downtown.
